Thought I just post this after the recent discussion on stinking vans. Our 86 had that 'feature' since we got it back in 92. After some days of non-op (with doors and windows closed) it was just awful - wanted to lower the windshield while driving. No refill of coolant required, no rear heater leak visible with the cover on it. Triggered by the recent list posts I removed the cover yesterday(after removing the wooden board and the front bench bolts (M10) to get the horizontal bar up enough to pull the cover to the front) and there it was - virtually every connection green. A smaller leak might be invisible even then and require pulling the core which is easy (2 clamps to remove the front vent, 2 screws holding the core). So if you need rear heat - trash the cover (or cut it out at the bottom to allow easy RR) and check the r.h. regularly. If you don't need r.h. and want a better front heat - trash the whole thing and plug the 2 hoses (my way). Moral: Only no cover is a good cover.
