Have the folks get in touch with Robert Lilley regarding his solution to the
engine replacement problem. In a nutshell he took the approach of keeping the
Wasserboxer, as it was designed to fit the van, and he carefully rebuilt it with
great attention spent in fine tuning and balancing. He counterweighted the
crank, installed carefully matched pistons and rods and had the the entire
rotating assembly....crank, rods, pins, pistons, flywheel and clutch assembly
spin-balances as racing engine builders do...so the engine is critically
balanced. Special attention was paid to the oil pump, the water pump, the valve
assemblies, the heads ported and polished. Much was done yet not to
extraordinary. This is the way I would have gone with my engine rebuild had my
own budget not been so squeezed.
Talk with him about it. It may be a way to go.
