Kevin, you said: << I purchased my 1985 Vanagon a few months ago. I can get only 12-13 gallons when the fuel gauge gets past the bottom of the red mark. After reviewing the owners manual, it says it's an 18 gallon tank including reserve. Obviously I don't want to run it dry, so if you own an 85, can you let me know how many gallons of fuel you take? >> According to the Bentley Manual, all 1990-1991 capacities are 16 US gallons (including reserve), except for Syncro models which hold 18.5 US gallons. Reserve is a stated 2.5 gallons, and is supposedly reached whenthe needle reaches the red area at the bottom of the guage. My fillups are generally just a hair over 12 gallons when the guage has reached the red area. Hope this helps.
