Hi Judith and Leo,
Well I compromised on the location of my VDO gauge. It's about 2" in
diameter, and with a dremel tool I removed the mounting flanges that held the
"Brake Light" indicator which was located just above my headlight switch. Then
I made the rectangular hole into a round one, and there lives my VDO Vacuum
gauge.
This was is a complicated decision for me. I wanted it to be on the dash pod.
Mainly for two reasons, tidyness, and reduce the chance of reflecting on my
windshield at night. Currently have the Brake light indicator just hanging
by it's wires outside of the dash pod cover, but like either on the steering
wheel cover close to the dash, or the spot above the digital clock that isn't
used but looks like it was made for a couple of indicator lights, or next to
the air/heat vent area on the left side of the dash.
On to the route. This took me about 35 minutes to do with the vehicle on a
lift. I followed a hole on the LHASA next to or near the brake vacuum boost
line, then I kind tied the vacuum line to a couple of wires and such until I
got to the first hole or space on the inside edge of the LH frame rail. I
followed that until the gas tank and just used the same passages as the rest
of the cables going forward. As I recall, I used a piece of coat hanger wire
to "fish" the hose from one side of the gas tank to the other. I stay with
the bundle of wire going to the dash area, which leads up behind the left
headlight. Behind the left Headlight bucket, real easy to remove, I either
used an existing hole or made a new hole in an unused grommet, I think it was
the latter. This land the rubber line just under the dash pod. I then work
the line up to the left side of the dash pod and through an opening near the
back. From there I brought the line forward to my location just above the
headlight switch.
The choice of which hose to tap in at the fuel pressure regulator, you'll
need to ask someone with knowledge of an 85, as mine is a 91. If you'd like
you could also follow each hose. The one you want will lead to a fitting on
the intake manifold system. The fitting will be before the intake runners
split, but after the throttle butterfly. Also the vacuum source will be have
vacuum at all times while the engine is running.
