This switch signals closed-throttle and wide-open-throttle to the ECU. It must be actuated at both those positions. If it fails to close at idle, the symptom will be that the engine will die whenever the rpm gets above maybe 1500, then restart as the revs drop down around 1000. If that's what you're calling a loping idle, then you have found the cause. Adjustment is covered in Bentley (mine unavailable right now) but I'm sure someone will fill you in. It's critical and ticklish and (I'm told) a pain.
