I own an '85 and had the misfortune, just after I bought it, of running out of gas a number of times. The tank would only hold 12 gallons. The guage said I still had a quarter of a tank when it ran out. I crawled under the van to take a look at the tank and determined that at some time in its past, someone had jacked up the van by placing one of the lift arms on one of the tank supports. It pushed the support and tank in, easily explaining why the guage was incorrect and why the tank held fewer gallons than expected. You might take a look. The dent in the tank did not appear out of the ordinary until I compared it with another Vanagon.
