As a general rule, only the campers got the spare tire under the front end, as the rear location was inapropriate combined with the closets. The 88 Syncro I previously owned was a camper, it had the spare under the front end, the 87 8-pax I have now has it in the rear, over the engine.

The front mounted spare was a M-option, it was M 343 and if so it should be printed on the M-list on your vehicle. To see the whole list, go to my web site @ http://members.tripod.com/perlindgren/ and you'll find it under the rear engine section.
