This is a some what common problem for VW and Audi automatics. No one ever checks the gear oil and the final drive will self destruct. Parts for these things are extremely expensive. Especially the Ring and Pinion gears. Since the only reason they fail is no oil, I would suggest finding a used one. Replace all seals before installing and if you are inclined not to regularly check the gear oil level and condition, use a synthetic. Regular oil actually evaporates or boils out of these things. That is how they go dry without leaving any signs of leakage. While the Trans is out for the final drive, it may be a good idea to have the automatic section overhauled. Should only be a few more hours labor to replace the clutches, bands, seal rings and seals, etc. Any good transmission shop should be able to help you here.
