Subject: '87 2.1L rad. fan hose nipples?

was flushing and filling the coolant system this weekend (among $300 and 40 hours of other things) and noticed what look like coolant hose input/outputs on the back of my radiator fan. Anyone know what these are? are my nearby heater-core lines supposed to run into the back of the radiator fan? never heard of such a thing, but then again we are talking vanagon here. Also, the nastiest discharge in the entire cooling system was found in the overflow bottle; there was boil-over sludge clogging the rad. cap, overflow hose, and overflow botle.
