What happened to mine is that the outer CV joint cratered. This shattered the cage and allowed me to easily leave the outer CV race in the steering knuckle while I removed the shaft to make the van drive-able.

I would recommend just removing the driveshaft. This is much easier than disassembling your other good? CV joint. As Eric mentioned, you cannot just remove the entire CV joint and still drive the vehicle. Be sure to mark the connections so you can re-assemble the shaft in the same orientation. These can be troublesome. Check the archives.
