My Syncro has this feature...

It was originally sold as a Mini-bus (tax class and vehicle class, 10 to 17 seats including driver) so it has a wire installed on the rear hatch to open it from the inside, it is actually an emergency exit!

Dealer installed, they only hooked a cable to the mechanism inside the rear hatch, with the end sticking out of a hole they drilled on the edge just by the glass. Works great, opens hatch whether locked or unlocked.
