I have a steel Merc rim 6.5J15 ET49 on my Syncro with Continental 215SR15 RV180 tyres. The tyres are actually bigger than your 215/75/15 :-) You can look at the details of my tyres at the continentaI web site. I think it is www.continental.co.za. I can't check this as my cyber patrol at work has this site blocked :-(

The spare was a bit of a problem to sqeeeeze in. I modified the cage removing the 2 small plates that stop the tyre from moving back. The side plates of the cage were bent/modified with a 4lb ( yes, a bit crude). The limiting factor, is the chassis members running from back to front. The diameter of my tyre is actually about 5 - 10 mm to big, but a hydraulic jack does a bit of persuasion. I have used a longer bolt to secure the spare wheel cage as the cage does not close properly. There is about a 30mm gap. I have lost a bit of ground clearance at the front, but if you draw a straight line from the back of the cage to the front of the underside of the bumper, it does not protrude. Yes, it is a bit of a mission to get the spare wheel in and to get it out I require a bar to lever the tyre out from between the chassis members when I require it, but I am willing to live with this. My spare is not something that I have had to use very often. (Touch wood, it hasn't been used in the last 50 000km)

Hope this helps you Syncronaughts

Jim, Who makes the 15" wheel you have? Are they made of steel? Is this wheel made for the Vanagon? What is the width and offset? Thanks for your help Eric
