Last year I bought a Thule "Ground Control" bike rack, not cheap but as far as I can tell it is the best thing going. Bikes and rack swing down for easy access to the rear hatch and has a lift strut to make the swing down painless. Thule also sells an extension to carry 4 bikes, as well as attachments to carry skis etc..
