Subject: WTB: oil-filler tube for Syncro

Hello List :

Does anybody that's parted out or swapped out a 2.1 waterboxer from a Syncro have a good oilfiller tube assembly they are willing to part with ? The plastic tube and metal pipe down to the crankcase are an inseparable unit ... and its one such complete assembly that I would like. VW wants too much money for a new one ... what can I say. The filler tube is different on a Syncro ... different engine mount height I think.

I separated the plastic part from the metal pipe to improve clearances, while removing my engine for replacement, such as you had to do on the older aircooled bus engines. DON'T do this maneuver on the waterboxers, because the plastic tube has a doubled inner liner to funnel the oil into the metal pipe at the bottom, and that liner sleeve effectively prohibits reassembly. And if you persist long enough, like I did, you end up with a mangled plastic pipe :-(( Its the toughest, most obstinate, resistant, resilient plastic I've ever tried to assembly onto anything. They should make kids toys out of that stuff !!!

After the fact I made a little tool to enable undoing the recessed 13 mm nut that holds the oilfiller flange at the bottom. I cut a 3/8 drive extension off at about 1 1/2 inches and filed two flat sides on the stub to turn it with an open wrench. Using this you can tighten or loosen the upper nut with the engine carrier in place using a 13 mm socket + modified short extension + open end wrench.
