Well, that's the first I've heard of the "911 of Vans" comment, but I know that some of the "...this vans gotta Porch motor innit..." comments stemmed from the 1970's sales of the Porsche 914 and 912-E here in the States, which featured the 1.7, 1.8. and finally 2.0 air cooled type 4 VW motors.

Those VW sellers who stretch reality during the sales process often equated "a Porsche with a VW motor" to be the same thing as "a VW with a Porsche motor" when selling their vans.

My other favorite (911) ignormaspeek is "...it's got six carburetors on it...".

Just for the record, when Vanagons were first introduced folks were quite impressed at the improvement they represented over the previous models and some even went so far as to label them the "Porsche 911 of vans." This would explain a previous poster's impression that that's the engine they came with or at least those trying to sell him one. Of course when Vanagons were first introduced they were air cooled and thoughts of Porsche engines, given the van's much improved handling, were obvious.
