Thanks to Howard, Eric, Darrell, Daryl, Tom, Derek and Mark. The fix was to remove the bell housing from the transaxle and replace the clip which had moved out of its groove. One post raised a question so I went back to my 1969 factory manual to read the procedure. It is: to screw the two halves of the input shaft together then 'unscrew until the splines. . . are in line'. The question I now have is this: If the sleeve did not move far enough to allow the two halves of the shaft to rotate independantly, how did the stud become unscrewed? Food for thought! Anyway, its fixed. ____________________ ORIGINAL MESSAGE: _____________________ I am replacing the engine in this vehicle. When I tried to remove the engine, the input shaft came part way out of the transaxle. I have rebuilt many air cooled transaxles and I know that they have a two piece input shaft held together by a stud and sleeve. Does this transaxle have the same set up, and can I do the repair without taking the transaxle out and completely apart? I have no manuals and there is no dealer within 300 miles. Thanks in advance.
