Darrell, I suspect that reasoning behind the 1/2 rear heater line was to balance the coolant flow between the front and rear heater circuits. The front circuit is much longer than the rear and would restrict flow more. By choosing a 1/2 line for the rear T'd from a 5/8 feed to the front, the flow rate would be more equal (hopefully).
