We had one of these when I was a kid, so they did exist 30 years ago.

I don't recall it being hard to light, just dangerous! You turned it upside down, covering the top with gasoline, then turned it upright and tossed a match on. After about 10 minutes of shooting flames six feet in the air, it settled down into a dull glow and could the be taken inside. Its no wonder they don't sell that version anymore!
