finally, after two years of irratic iddling, boy idiot gets busy in the engine bay and fixes the problem: it turns out the hinged metal strip on the throttle control valve had swung out of position and wasn't making contact with the tiny switch that tells the ECU whats going on. I'm purring at a steady 900 now. Thanks Bill & David!
