>Deep cycle versus regular battery? *** Deep Cycle. Optima is the best choice, but you will have to lay it on its side, top posts pointed forward, and cut two slots for the top post to pass by the forward lip at the auxiliary battery box under the driver's seat. >Do I need a special assembly kit? *** NO. and where can I find it? *** Bus Depot has/had one. But I don't know if it is adequate or not. At minimum (for safety) you should have: 1) #8 wire from + post of starter battery (or alternator) to + post of auxiliary battery (via switch/relay). The smaller stock wire on most Westys was not designed for an auxiliary battery and is not safe.. this is the most important point. 2) 40 amp (75 amp better) relay (or other switching device) to replace the existing 30 amp 'fridge relay'. >Where can I find simple information on how to do it? *** It's all simple if you've done it before. If not there is a bit of thinking to do. To do it right (and safe) there is a certain minimum understanding of wire sizes, safe connections, safe wire routing, and relays necessary. You can also check out www.vanagon.com for wiring instructions, but last time I checked these instructions did not meet minimum requirements mentioned above. Also, there is the archives. (This topic was discussed in detail from about January 99 through March 99... but I can't guarantee simple.) Will be happy to answer questions as you come up with them. Good Luck, Bill 90 Westy Syncro
