Murray:

While I don't have an artificial leg, I am 6'10" and familiar with not having enough clearance under the steering wheel to work the clutch comfortably. A couple of minor changes have helped me. One is relocating the handle strap from it's position on the lower part of the door up to just below the window. This allowed room for my knee to slide between the wheel and the door when working the clutch. The other was bending the tabs on the back of the seat track to allow it to slide back further.

Good luck, John -----Original Message----- From: Murray Crawford <murrayerin@YAHOO.COM> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Date: Tuesday, January 11, 2000 3:13 PM Subject: 81 steering wheel height

I emailed Tom C and he suggested I try the whole group for an answer. I'm looking at an 81 westy manual but have not got enough room to work the clutch on account of the fact i'm 6'3" and have an artificial lower left leg. If the steering wheel can be raised 2-3' driving it would be fine - can this be done?. The other option is to put on a smaller diameter steering wheel but then it might be a battle to turn the wheel.

Any suggestions would be great. Past vans were a 69 RHDrive in England and a 74 auto LHD so have not encountered this problem before, however I do prefer manual transmission. Could replies be sent to murrayerin@yahoo.com please.

Thanks Murray
