I've taken the roof unit out of my '85 to clean and seal it once, and to replace a valve I had to do this again. The only bad thing I can think about it is that the headliner usually will always show where it was. Cigarette tar stains and whatever on the headliner. You will also have a few screwholes in the headliner and you will need to find a way to plug the hole in the floor behind the drivers seat where the hoses exit and enter.

A lot of people do take them out and for the most part, it looks fine. Send me the plastic parts--mine are disintegrating and getting new ones isn't an option!
