The problem with these heaters is that they consume oxygen in the heating process (it's just another form of oxidation). That's why they say to use them with ventilation. A friend of mine went to Australia with a group of other Americans a number of years ago to teach for a while. They were put up in apartments that had these kind of heaters for the rare cold evening & were told to always use them with a window opened to replace the oxygen in the room. One couple in the group ignored the warning and just never woke up again.
