I have seen a couple in the UK with spares mounted on the back.  They are on
cradles which swing aside to open the tail gate.  One such appeared in a
magazine article which I often drool over "VW Motoring" April 1999 issue.
I have tried scanning the article but my scanner does not reproduce printed
pictures very well otherwise I would put it on the net for you to see.
