Same thing here in Norway, winter diesel form mid October to end of March. Stinks real yucky! Anyway Maynard, This could also be a little bit of water collecting in the bottom of your fuel tank, which clogs up the lines under the Golf. It doesn't take much to stop the car, and water is heavier than diesel, so it will collect on the bottom. It is meant to be separated in the filter, which should be drained regularly.
