Well I managed to get over to my van and the "do-hickey" is made by Crane
Cams. DuOh what else could it be! >>>>>>>>>>
Bulley: Ignition doo-hickey
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Its entirely disconnected and there are
points in the distributor. However the condenser (looks like) is mounted on
the outside of the distributor. >>>>>>>>>>
Bulley: Should be on the outside.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
As screwed up as everything in this van is I feel it necessary to check
every vital part to make sure it is correct.
>>>>>>>>>>
Bulley: Good idea, but don't freak out. Sounds like you got a decent deal,
right? You mean you actually paid money for this?? ...oh. (kidding) :)
How will I know if this is the
correct distributor (.009)? >>>>>>>>>>
Bulley: The correct distributor (if memory serves me) is a 225. The 009 is
a "better" advance curve distributor, but it is purely mechanical, rather
than vacuum advanced/retarded. Whether the 009 is "better" is debatable. It
is at least "satisfactory". You can tell which you have by pulling your
dist, and looking at the part #. The last three digits are the
nomenclature.
Also new Crane ignitions are about twice as
expensive as the Petronix igniter. Crane uses optics, Petronix looks like
it
uses mechanical. Which would be best? >>>>>>>>>>
Bulley: I can only speak for the Pertronix Ignitor, as that is what I have.
It uses what I would call a Hall-effect generator/induction pick-up (that's
a spinning magnet, and a magnetically-sensitive doo-hickey to you and me).
It has no real "moving parts", nothing in contact with another friction
surface, no optics to get grease on, it works great, and its cheap as dirt.
Stick with the Pertronix.
