David; Sounds like your vans problem may not be a "common" problem. I would be sure and scan the archives. Some things that come to mind are engine grounding straps, ECU grounding, TEMPII sensor and fuel pressure. You say the coil has been replaced but did you use the "latest" version from VW? I believe it should have a green label but am not sure.
