Tim, I went to the hardware store and got two brass couplings, each with a barb on one end and a threaded fitting on the other end. The barb should be the right size to fit snugly into the hose. The I used Teflon tape and a brass threaded cap on the open end. I used the original hose clamps to clamp the hose to the barbed ends. Finally I ran the engine for a while to assure no leaks. If you couple the ends of the two heater hoses you create a short cut for the hot coolant to return to the engine before going forward to the radiator; that's why I capped each off instead.
