How does the heat in the Synchro compare to the heat in your 84 Westy? Don't they have the same system (more or less)? They're both pretty much inadequate at these temps I suspect. I think Gerry and Per's suggestions might be the way to go -- insulate the water lines. I too have found the rear heater much more effective than the front, and the front only blows heat with the vehicle at speed. Cardboard over the rad is a big help too.

Alan, Ottawa may be the coldest capital city in the world, but Winnipeg is the coldest major city. The only thing worse than being the coldest city is being the second-coldest :) (Sorry to you too Pierre!)

Go with Gas (heaters, that is. Instant heat.)

Anyway, warmish heat is better than nothing. The gas heater in my old 73 bus (Safari model or something, with a permanent raised roof?) was in the rear. The driver had to keep trading off with the passengers so that your driving foot wouldn't go numb.
