Doug this sound just like the problem my 81 had until I backed off the lifter preload low vacuum at hot idle problem disconecting the pump leans the mess out and then it fires do you have compression gauge to test the compression barley warm and then hot or a vacuum gauge to test the manifold vacuum at warm idle.
