cal = California model. made in 80-83 air-cooled models of the Vanagon. I'm sure Chris will correct me if I'm wrong. The rest of the US got the Federal model -- yep, use got dem stinking points.

There are more differences but here's a few:

You will notice an O2 sensor The CAT goes from front to back vs side to side NO Points. :-) Rejoice!!! Your distributor is 039 905 205C You have a different coil Take a look in the Bentley starting at page 28.8. There is a very nice detailed overview and troubleshooting guide for the cal ignition system. If you don't have a Bentley, I would advise getting one. I used this troubleshooting guide when I replaced FreeBird's electrical system cause of that fire. It's in the archives burried somewhere.
