This unit only replaces the points, you still have the distributor cap/rotor and the voltage loss.

Similar to Compufire?

If you have the money, I would go with the compufire unit so that the rotor and cap are eliminated.

I like the optical Crane unit (had an Allision unit- before Crane bought them out. I still have my Allision red coil- 9 years old, on my 73 Bus)

I have one (could be the age) but it is engine is not as strong as the Optical unit. But there is only a @$40 difference between these and the Crane unit. Check out Hot VWs for the best price.
