What if you attach your multimieter (assuming you have one) to the coil, start the van, get it to die, and get an instant reading of the coil when it happens, hopefully it will show you that you have an intermittent connection. Hopefully also, you will have an expensive meter with the history function built in, so if it is to quickly to read on the display while driving, or cursing, you can replay the ocurence. Just an idea. Sounds like a wiring problem to me. Also, what if you get the van to run, and go move around the wiring while running, see if you can simulate the cause?
