John-
I could explain it, but I might loose my contract with Ford, VW, or both.
Sorry. (kidding)

I recently changed the oil in my tranny to Redline MT-90 and the benefit is
substantial.
When I bought the Van with 175,000 miles on it I changed the oil to Slick
50 just
because I wanted new oil in there and I didn't know any better(didn't have
the
backup of the Vanagon List). The tranny displayed the characteristics of
age most
people discribe like hard shifts to 2nd especially when cold. After the
change to
Slick 50 there was no apparent improvement at all but I did feel better
knowing the
oil was fresh. I should also mention there was a moderate amount of fine
metal dust
on the magnetic drain plug but no "chunks".
Anyway, by 195,000 miles I was on the List and and keeping my eyes open
for
helpfull tips. The thread on transmission oil a while back prompted me to
give
Redline a try. Without a doubt the change to MT-90 has been profound!
VERY
noticable improvement in shifting ease and smoothness. Best $35.00 I have
spent on
my Vanagon to date. I would not hesitate to recommend this upgrade to
others who
are interested.
Coincidentally, I was so pleased with the benefit in my Vanagon I decided
to change
the oil in the 5 speed transmission in my 91 Ford Ranger pickup to see if
it would
have the same effect. Unfortunately, while I think I detect a small amount
of
improved smoothness in shifting, the benefit is no way near as substantial
as in the
VW.
Bulley, can you explain that phenomenon?
