Alan, back in the early seventies I lived in Bethel, Alaska. Now Alaska is
serious snow country. One winter my job took me to the village of Chevak, about
100 miles further west. I was to do and inspection on the school, and perform
some other duties. There had been a big storm that blew for days before I went
out there.
When I arrived and went to the school....kids were out of school at the
time....the school maintenance man met me and we went to the school
together. The entire front of the school was under an enormous snowdrift that
reached to the peak of the roof of the school. A tunnel had been dug and we
walked through that tunnel to the front door. Must have been a good twenty feet
or so in length. It was amazing to me. I did my business and left..
A couple of months later...same winter....I had to go back out there. Upon my
arrival I observed the front of the school was completely clear of snow, but
the back of the school had snow to the roof top. I commented to the maintenance
man about where the snow was last time I was out, and he said with a twinkle
in his eye, "Don't they(US Public Health Service) tell you Gussuks(Yupik for
"white man") anything. Out here we have only one snowstorm a year. The rest of
the time it just blows back and forth!!"
Cracked me up!
