Interesting. In order for the CD to be "encrypted" it would most likely
mean that the images are stored in a proprietary format, and a program has
been developed to read this format. This "interface" program then has the
protection built into it. Many times a knowledgeable person can reach in
past the interface layer of an application like this and directly access the
"assets" or images, bypassing the protection.
Most CD-ROM track-based encryption algorithms can be "ignored" by the new
CD-burning software, so if that is the methodology used it is probably not a
big deal.
Oh, and PS, I only burn CD-ROMs to make back-ups of my commercial software,
that I then lock away in a safe. And I make sure that audio CD-ROMs that I
copy are never played on more than one machine simultaneously.

Getting
hold of one of these and "burning" a copy has to be the way to go. Someone
on this list works for a dealer or has a good friend etc.... It just may
take a little while.. I want one of the vanagon portion and will pay a fee
for the service.

From what I have been told, they use a CD with a special encryption key that
is plugged into the back of the computer (I have never seen this only heard
about it). You can have the CD, but without the encryption key it is
worthless. Also, because of the encryption, you can't just burn a copy of
the CD. This would give you only a copy of the encrypted CD which would not
work without the key (get the picture).
Of course there are always folks out there that can hack into anything and I
have heard of pirated copies of the CD, but I feel bad about buying one.
However I don't feel bad about turning my microfiche into hard copies and
then scanning them in for my own personal "entertainment purposes only" CD.
Not that I would do anything like that :)
