The whole concept of on-board fire supression for cars has been handled in racing for years. Often Halon to minimize damage to pricey engines which are still running while you spray them, but all sorts are available. For instance, a 2.5lb Halon manually activated system runs about $200 from OGRacing (http://209.19.107.64/ogshell/loadpage.pl?821929+catfire.html; no plugola, they're just the first website that came to mind).
