Phil,

One big problem for you is that the 1600 engine hardly lives and exists anywhere. It was only sold in various European markets (not including Norway, I've never seen it here) and never made it to the USA. The last 1600 cc'd bus there was 1971.

If the heads and intake ports on your 1600 is identical to a Bug's heads, then you should be able to go the Bug route, maybe the type3 squareback if the Bug parts get too tall. It seems that there are several knowledgeable VW stores in the UK, I guess you should have a chat with some of them.
