One thing that makes work on CV joints much less messy is avoiding solvents.
I just used a rag and wiped off the grease. It remains thick and doesn't get
all over everything as it does when a solvent is applied.  This does require
disassembly of the joint, but reassembly is easy once everything is clean.


As a bonus, the method is also less toxic and less expensive.
