Subject:      making a Tach?

I am on the verge of making a digitool but i was thinking, why not add a
tach. i figure you'd need an inductor pickup to strap on a plug wire then
an IC to multiply the output by 4. Put the out-put of that into a counter
and finailly a 7bit digital display. Bingo! Has anybody done this?  Would
there be an eisier pickup location?

Ok, back to the grind stone...
