The whole concept of on-board fire supression for cars has been handled in racing for years. Often Halon to minimize damage to pricey engines which are still running while you spray them, but all sorts are available.

For instance, a 2.5lb Halon manually activated system runs about $200 from OGRacing (http://209.19.107.64/ogshell/loadpage.pl?821929+catfire.html; no plugola, they're just the first website that came to mind). I'm all for making our own stuff, but when it's out there and tested for not killer amounts of $$, I say buy rather than find out when it comes down to it that the system I though I engineered properly fails :-)
