I was at a VW dealer near Hannover Germany in April of '99 and I asked the mechanic about the head/corrosion problem. It happens in Germany just like in the US and Norway. When the T3 first came out with the WBX, he saw the problem a lot. He did feel that the problem was more pervasive in the US but he wasn't sure why. He wrote it off saying that US mechanics don't know what they are doing on German autos. My German friend thought this was hilarious!

Well it happens in Norway, so it is naive to believe it doesn't happen in Germany. I often see T3s for sale with new heads/gaskets, and the local dealer recognized the problem too. Same goes for the TDs, but those more often crack from stress rather than corrosion.
