Hi Phil,

The only VW steering wheels I have tried thus far are from mid-80's A2 (Mark II?) Golfs and GTI's. The splines will fit fine but they do not have the coneshaped cavity just below the splines (don't know the technical term). As a consequence, the steering wheel sits about 5mm-7mm above the plastic cover of the steering column. This leaves a gap which dirt and dust can get to unless you place some kind of cover. And in addition to that, you have to bend the horn contacts upwards or they will not connect with the brass horn contact ring under the steering wheel. I used this arrangement satisfactorily until I got tired of looking at that gap.

I did not check to see if the later Golf steering wheels will fit as I did not have one available. They may have the aforementioned "cavity" which is supposed to sit of the shoulder of the column.

BTW, my 87 Vanagon has powersteering. I would imagine that the increased steering effort on non-power vans (caused by a smaller steering wheel) may be less than acceptable. Alas, I have not tried tried any aftermarket wheels yet. However, I have always used Momo wheels and hub adapters on my other vehicles w/o any fitment problems.
