Chris: Four out of five ain't bad! I think that is a Meatloaf lyric.

It's best to remove the hub to drift out the remnant of the stud but, seeing how it's been hammered on like an inmate's noodle already, there's probably no harm in Brinnelling those wheel bearings a little more. Although I've never replaced one on a Vanagon, there was always enough clearance to replace a wheel stud without removing the hub on the ones I have done. Just take care not to booger up the hole as you are knocking out that stud. You can use a lugnut (turn it upside down) with a suitable spacer under it to seat the new stud. Try to start the serrations of the stud in the grooves left in the hub by the old stud. Remember: heat, penetrant and antisieze are all tools of the trade.
