Sounds remarkably like a ground problem. Without tracing the circuit, sounds as though your clock is somehow getting its ground through the headlights, so when you turn them on the ground goes away. Wouldn't surprise me if you had some other stuff behaving oddly too. Like for example your panel lights don't work. They have the same ground as the clock, should be pin 5 on the panel connector going to a 20-ga brown wire to ground connector 10 behind the dash.

Turn your lights on and follow the ground path from the ground connector, looking for 12v. If you find it then you just passed the problem point.
