And it's simple too...on the left side of the thermostat housing ('86up). Unplug wiring harness (don't lose the clip). No need to drain coolant (at least on the '86 up). You lose maybe a pint when you pull the thing out, but if you do it quickly, you can lose less. Replace the o-ring while you're at it.
