Hi Bob.

It is not a case of "my theory". The hydraulic lifters in a '61 Plymouth Valiant work the same as those in a '95 BMW seven series. Lash allows engine oil to enter the lifter. When the lash is eliminiated, oil cannot enter the lifter. For a lifter to overfill the "door" would need to be open with no lash and I don't think that can ever happen to more than one lifter at a time.

Adjusting a 2.1L lifter is like trying to position a moving target. I believe the only way the .006" clearance would work is if you allowed the lifter to fill to it's maximum travel. However then you would have converted the hyd lifter into a solid lifter which would re-invent the cam follower that we got rid of in the '70s.

I'm also interested in the experience of other list members (excluding any '61 Valiant stories).
