Try it before you leave the auto parts shop. The German supplier imported two versions to the U.S. that are incorrect for the Vanagon. Just about every wholesaler in the U.S. (and therefore tons of retailers) ended up with hundreds of these incorrect gas caps on their shelves. One of the two versions is very obviously wrong (too small, and also doesn't latch properly), and the other one looks correct but also doesn't latch properly. I have been backordering gas caps until I get a shipment directly from Germany that I know is correct. Not that other vendors may not have the right one, but be aware that there is a potential problem. If it's wrong, you'll know as soon as you try it because it won't latch securely.
