Volks, Thanks all who offered solutions, this is a wierd one. I just sold this 87 GL to a good friend (Quantum owner, but never Vanagons) on Wednesday. Then this... He didn't know where the battery was, I told him then flew the SOS to the List. I just got a call, the battery had somehow shorted itself out -on the battery tray lid! When I bought the Van 4 years ago, I had always wondered why PO had put a rubber flower, literally some bathroom thingy that kept the positive terminal from contacting the battery tray lid, somehow this fell off and bamo, the pos and neg terminals hit the lid simultaneousely long enough to short the batt. Lesson learned, when purchasing aftermarket batteries that don't spec out to what VW put in originally, if the battery is too tall in it's case dimensions, THIS CAN CAUSE A PROBLEM!!! No other fuses blown, and all works great now. Thanks again Regards Mark Magee 90 Carat 87 GL now happily remarried ><>
