Why not upgrade to a 2.1 LWBX rather than staying with the 1.9L engine. Lately there have been some complete 2.1L wbx engines posted for sale by some list members. They were complete with all the elctronics and fuel injection, etc.

By going the 2.1L route you keep it all basically Vanagon. If you use an inline engine you get into a whole different set of problems.

If you pick up a 2.1L that is run out, it high miles or something, you can have it rebuilt with lots of mods for performance and increased life for around $3000 or so and everything will fit right back into your van without having to hassle other modifications. I looked into this pretty thoroughly and even though I am for the moment having a strictly stock 2.1L put back in, it was for budgetary constraints, noting more. I came out of the deal with a long block, which I am rebuilding with all the mods. When done, it goes into the van and the current stock motor will be sold.

Just an idea.

Drop a note to Robert Lilley on this list. He has a lot to tell about it, and you might look up Bob Donalds of Boston Engines...or check out his website at bostonengines.com. Though they differ a bit about the philosophy of rebu8ilding these engines, they both offer good info.
